Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday released water from Handri Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) first phase canal expansion work by switching on the motors at Mallyala Pumping Station at Nandikotkur mandal of Nandyal district.

The release of water will help solve the drinking water and irrigation needs in the area to a large extent. Officials said now 40 TMC water is available and if the Polavaram-Banakacharla Link Canal is completed, it will provide 200 TMC of water which is going waste from the Godavari River.

The government is spending Rs.3,873 crore on 554-km long canal widening and lining works under Phase-1 and 2.

After going around a photo exhibition, the Chief Minister directed the Irrigation Department to look after not only the canals and projects but also the usage of groundwater. He wanted plans to be finalised to connect Galeru-Nagari, Handri-Neeva, Somasila-Swarnamukhi at Tirupati and blamed the erstwhile government for bringing the development works on HNSS to a standstill during 2019-24.

Ministers Nimmala Ramanaidu, Payyavula Keshav, B.C. Janardhan Reddy, N. Md. Farooq, MP Byreddy Shabbari and others were present.
